Design/ Manufacture/ Art direction
This was my degree show project, too long ago in 2005. I became ensconced in dissecting the processes we use to visualise motion, simplifying to what I understood to be the basic components – a sequence of frames becoming black and white lines. From frames of animation to the scratchy frame rolls of early motion picture, I then looked to the tricks our super brains can fall for when confronted with an image that challenges its processes through Optical Art. Elements of Charlie Chaplin’s playfully proportioned ‘Tramp’ silhouette were combined with my own experiments into creating movement using layers of fabric and interacting garments.
